About
Able Child works to protect, educate, and amplify the voices of children and young people with disabilities, working towards the realisation of equal rights for children and young people with disabilities and their families across Africa. Guided by a rights-based approach, we believe in a world where no child with a disability is left behind. For over 40 years, we have worked with African organisations of persons with disabilities (OPDs) who form the Able Child Africa Network, to uphold the rights of children and youth with disabilities. We generate evidence, influence policies, and strengthen child participation to drive systemic change for children with disabilities across the continent.
Mission. Able Child is a UK-based organisation, which is driven by a clear and powerful vision: a world in which no child with a disability is left behind. We do this by supporting a network of African organisations to protect, educate and amplify the voices of children and young people with disabilities. Together, we work across Africa, breaking down barriers to inclusion so that children and young people with disabilities are able to thrive. We are addressing a significant and underrepresented need. Nearly 29 million children in East and Southern Africa are living with a disability. A significant proportion of these children live in poverty without access to basic services including education and health care. They are disproportionately vulnerable to violence, exploitation and abuse, and many children continue to spend much or all of their lives in institutions, away from their families. Our work is guided by a rights-based, child-centred approach that places children at the heart of everything we do. Every child has the right to feel safe, access quality education, and have their voice heard. Together with the African Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) who form our Able Child Africa Network, we work to uphold the rights of children and young people with disabilities. Able Child’s strategy is built around three intersecting pillars: 1. The right to feel safe. We stand up for the rights of children and young people with disabilities, so they are protected and included in their communities. 2. The right to an education. We ensure that children and young people wit
