About

Rwenzori Empowerment Initiative (REI) is a community-based organisation in Kasese District, operating in the Rwenzori Subregion of Western Uganda, founded by people who grew up in the Rwenzori region and chose to stay and work there. Our focus is violence against women and girls. It is a widespread harm that devastates health and livelihoods, yet it receives little funding in rural districts like Kasese.REI brings together what survivors need in one place, because they cannot recover through health, legal or economic support alone:Safe spaces: we run or support safe spaces in Kasese Municipality and Kasese Town Council.Services: psychosocial counselling, referral to clinical and legal care, and routes into livelihoods programmes.Education: work with girls to reduce their risk of violence. We use existing health, police and justice services instead of building parallel ones, so each shilling goes further. Our staff and volunteers are neighbours, and many are survivors. This gives REI access, trust and accountability that an outside organisation would struggle to match, at a fraction of the cost. We track what each service achieves and what it costs, starting with:the number of survivors supportedhow many complete their referralshow many regain an incomethe cost per survivor supportedThat way, we put resources where they do the good and can show funders the value of every shilling.

Mission. To prevent violence against women and girls in Rwenzori Subregion and support survivors to rebuild safe, healthy, and independent lives through community-led, evidence-based solutions that deliver lasting impact.
